Discover the beauty of one of Istanbul's main attractions – the Galata Tower. Do your homework before you go on holiday.

What to know

Istanbul is one of the most important touristic centers in the world. It is the only city in the world spreading over two continents – Europe and Asia. As one of the largest centers in the area, it has everything you can expect from a massive metropolis. From this point of view, it will surprise you with its vibrant atmosphere. Shopping centers? Check! Nightlife? Check! Tourist attractions? Plenty of them, everywhere.

The Galata Tower is by far one of the most representative tourist attractions in the entire Turkey and not just Istanbul. Just like the name clearly suggests it, it is located in the Galata quarter of Instabul, which is easily accessible.

The tower is often referred to as the Galata Kulesi (a common name on signs) – it Turkish name. Once you are around it, you simply cannot miss it. It is a medieval structure erected hundreds of years ago. Also, it is entirely made of stone.

The Galata Tower is located closed to the main junction of Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. When you get in the area, an open view will make the tower quite visible. There are signs everywhere too. The tower is not just high, but it also has a cone cap. It dominates the local skyline from pretty much any direction you look at it.

The ideal place to have a panoramic view of Istanbul's peninsula, as well as the surroundings.

The tower has nine stories. It measures just under 220 feet in height, hence its visibility from miles away. When it was built, it represented the tallest structure in Istanbul. It was designed with military purposes, so walls are over 12 feet in thickness.

The Galata Tower can be visited and no early booking is required. You can simply go on site and pay a small entry fee, then explore the interior. It is organized like a museum, so it will keep you busy for a few hours.
